School wins cash for going Green


A Carmarthenshire school has won a £4,000 prize for going green.
The aim of the challenge was to find out who was the cleverest when it came to energy conservation, reducing waste and environmental best practice.
It was open to all secondary schools in the county.
The judges were particularly impressed that Dyffryn Taf has a litter prevention and recycling strategy in place.
The school has also been monitoring its energy use and made efforts to reduce its consumption; and much work has been carried out on the school garden with plans to develop it into a recreational and educational resource.
As well as the prize money, the school received a certificate of achievement and some litter recycling bins so that pupils can recycle in the school yard as well as inside the classroom.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Philip Hughes and local member Cllr Sue Allen went along to the school to hand over the cheque.
Cllr Hughes said: “I would like to congratulate all the pupils and staff for all their efforts and hard work in improving the school environment which will go a long way to reducing their overall carbon footprint.
“It is very encouraging to see that secondary schools are looking at ways of reducing their school waste. Local authorities have very challenging recycling/composting targets to reach, so it is important that we all play a part to help achieve those targets.”
The prize money will go towards purchasing materials, plants and garden furniture to develop the school garden and pay for repairs to the greenhouse.
Dyffryn Taf has already achieved the Green Flag under the Eco Schools programme.
Cllr Allen, who is also a Governor at the school, added: “I am very impressed with the good work being carried out at Dyffryn Taf and I think we could all learn a lesson from them in how to be more environmentally-friendly in our daily lives. Well done to all the staff and pupils.”
Other prizes went to Ysgol Glanymor in Burry Port and Bryngwyn School in Llanelli.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
