Thornton wins the Next Steps apprentice competition

A teenager fresh out of school has landed his dream job in the construction industry after winning Next Steps 2012 – a unique competition to find a new building apprentice for Carmarthenshire.
Thornton Boswell, of Felinfoel, Llanelli, has only just picked up his GCSE results from Bryngwyn School, but this week he started work for Llanelli and Gwendraeth-based building firm Lloyd & Gravell Ltd.
Thornton was one of six candidates who have taken part in the competition throughout the summer in a bid to win a fast-track to their chosen career.
And whilst competing against each other for the coveted job, they worked together as a team to complete a project that would benefit the community and leave a lasting legacy.
The 16-year-old said he was ‘over the moon’ to have won the competition, and started his first day of his carpentry apprenticeship on Monday.
“I really didn’t expect to win – I’m really happy,” he said. “Chances like this don’t come around often for young boys like me.”
The winner was announced at a ceremony held on Friday at Parc Y Scarlets.
Next Steps is an annual competition run in partnership by Carmarthenshire County Council, Coleg Sir Gâr and Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd in association with Lloyd & Gravell Ltd.
It is one of several innovative projects which are designed to encourage people to work towards careers in the construction industry, regardless of their age, gender, or background.
Following a round of interviews and a week of intensive skills training, six candidates are put to work on real building sites where they learn new skills off experienced mentors.
Along the way, they take part in a series of challenges in a bid to win a reward and avoid a forfeit.
This year, Next Steps was supported by Ski Pembrey and Ffos Las Racecourse who put on reward and forfeit experiences.
At Ski Pembrey, the winning team enjoyed free skiing lessons, whilst the others weeded the slopes.
At Ffos Las, the winners enjoyed VIP hospitality whilst the others helped groundsmen replace divots and repair fences after each race.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
