New bus service launched for Aberystwyth

A new bus service linking Aberystwyth town centre, the University and the National Library has been officially opened by the Minister for Regeneration, Huw Lewis AM.
The new 03 Mid Wales Travel bus, which provides a three times an hour service, will call from town at the National Library, the University, the Arts Centre and Sports Centre via a new link road.
The new road, adjoining the back of the National Library and the University’s Sports Centre was funded through a grant worth £192,750 by the Aberystwyth Regeneration Area Fund.
It aims to make a difference to the environment by reducing the number of cars and traffic on campus as well as opening up a new cycling and walking route.
Aberystwyth University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor April McMahon, explains: “We’re delighted with this new venture between the University and the Library. Not only will it provide a better bus service for students, staff and the general public but it will provide a safer environment. I would also like to think it goes a long way to meeting our aspiration of further encouraging local people to take advantage of what we have to offer.”
Andrew Green, Librarian, National Library of Wales, says: “The Aberystwyth Regeneration project has given us the opportunity to work effectively in partnership with other key organisations in the town. This latest project enables us to highlight our individual institutions but do so in the context of the other excellent experiences available in the town.”
The Welsh Government’s Minister for Regeneration, Huw Lewis AM, adds: “Creating a vibrant, attractive and thriving town for the people of Aberystwyth is a priority as well as improving accessibility. The Welsh Government is committed to rejuvenating town centres and this project not only improves access for residents and visitors to key destinations in Aberystwyth, it also supports the town in promoting its varied culture.”
During term time the new service will circulate between town, the National Library and Penglais Campus every 20 minutes between 07.40 and 19.40, Monday to Friday. The evening service between 20.20 and 22.20 is hourly with the last bus leaving the Arts Centre at 22.33.
On weekends and out of term, the service will be hourly between 7.45 and 22.45. A full timetable and a campus bus route map can be found here: http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/maps-travel/bus/new-bus/
Mid Wales Travel, a local company based in Penrhyncoch, will use a new 29-seater Euro 5 engine Enviro200 bus for this service which is the latest low emission and environmentally friendly model.
A single journey from town to the destinations on Penglais Hill and vice versa will cost £1 (50p for children) and can be purchased on board the bus. Aberystwyth University staff and students and National Library of Wales staff will be able to purchase an annual pass for £65. This will be available from the University’s Students’ Union. Those with a Ceredigion Concessionary Travel Pass will be able to use the service for free.
