UEFA tournament boost for Carmarthen Town AFC

Carmarthen Town AFC will now be hosting three games at Richmond Park in the UEFA Women’s Under 19 Championship final tournament which will take place in Wales in August 2013.
Following a site visit by UEFA representatives the Football Association of Wales have asked the club to host three matches in the group stages of the finals tournament on the 19th, 22nd and 25th of August 2013. The draw to decide the teams taking part in these matches will be held in April 2013, when the qualifying teams are decided. Kick off times will also be confirmed.
Executive Chairman Gareth Jones was delighted with the news.
“This is the first time ever that Wales have hosted a Finals Tournament and to be part of it is a great honour not only for Carmarthen Town Football Club but also for the whole town. We expect the usual suspects, France, Germany, to be part of the finals which will attract a worldwide audience.”
As part of preparations for the tournament the FAW have awarded Carmarthen Town a grant to build new dressing rooms, set to UEFA standards.
Tenders have been sent out to local companies and hopefully work will begin in the near future.
Rebecca Crockett, the Tournament Director on behalf of the FAW, has staged matches at Richmond Park previously and is familiar with the club set-up.
She noted her thanks to the club for their help to date. “I look forward to working with you towards a successful tournament in 2013.”
The FAW has already held one meeting at the Carmarthen Town Football Club Community Centre which was attended by numerous people involved with local football and also by several business people from the town as well.
Carmarthen Town Community Programme sponsor Neil Alexander of EMC Services was one of those who attended the meeting and he reacted positively to the news. “Carmarthen Town Football Club has long been regarded as a well run unit and being asked to host such important games is a result of that hard work and a compliment to all involved.”
Jones also emphasised how important this could be for the whole community.
“Not only are we hosting an international tournament but we are also showcasing Carmarthen Town and the whole of Carmarthenshire to a new audience. Some of these games will be televised live across Europe. Hopefully local businesses will benefit from the influx of visitors to the town in August next year. Not only do they need places to stay and to eat but will also need to be entertained.”
Carmarthenshire Head of Leisure, Ian Jones, also attended the meeting and was more than pleased to welcome the group matches to Carmarthen. “The awarding such a prestigious tournament to Wales, with some matches to be played at Richmond Park is fantastic news. I am sure that we will do our utmost to ensure that it is a successThe FAW promised to hold further meetings with the view of establishing a firm base of volunteers to help with all the hard work to be done before the tournament begins and during the games.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
