Carmarthenshire healthy schools success

A taste of success was in the air when Carmarthenshire pupils came together to celebrate their involvement in the Healthy Schools scheme.
The Healthy Schools Celebration event was held at Carmarthen’s Halliwell Centre where schoolchildren celebrated their schools’ success in attaining its Healthy Schools plaque.
Pupils were entertained by comical children’s entertainment act Jugglestruck, and also saw a live wormery at work by Eco Schools, showing how being healthy and eco-friendly can work together.
The event ended with a presentation of plaques to 33 schools that had been successful in attaining the Healthy Schools Award this year.
Carmarthenshire schools joined the national scheme, funded by the Welsh Assembly, in 2001.
Every school in the county is now pursuing various healthy actions to achieve Healthy Schools accreditation.
The scheme aims to educate children on a range of health related issues, including nutrition, as well as sexual and emotional health.
Carmarthenshire’s Healthy Schools Co-ordinator Lynn Edwards said: “The event turned out to be very successful with teachers, pupils and multi agency representatives enjoying the opportunity to share knowledge and ideas on being a healthy school.
“It was also an opportunity for the scheme to thank schools on their endeavours throughout the year and to make the public aware of the good work being conducted in schools in regard to improving the health of its pupils.”
Geraint Bevan, School Improvement Officer for Carmarthenshire, said: “Educating young people about the importance of being physically and emotionally healthy is essential in the fight against health problems later on in life.
“We are working hard to improve the health of children and young people and I am delighted that so many schools have taken the opportunity to be part of the healthy schools scheme.
“I congratulate all those involved and would encourage others schools to follow their example.”
