Patients' tranquil environment provided by generosity of Pembrokeshire people

Thanks to the generosity of people in Pembrokeshire, breast cancer patients have a more tranquil environment to be treated in.
The breast services area at Withybush Hospital has been totally transformed through donations to the unit.
A Pembrokeshire beach theme means the treatment areas are less clinical.
Tessa Phillips, Macmillan Breast Care nurse, said: “The breast services rooms now have two designated consulting rooms, a quiet room and a prosthesis fitting room/Breast Care Nurses office.
“Following consultations with patients we have aimed to make the environment as non-clinical and relaxing as possible, and the room artwork is based upon the theme of Pembrokeshire Beaches as are the room names.
“The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority kindly donated images which we have been able to use on the medical privacy screens, the league of friends have donated TVs and Fishguard WI have donated images for the corridor.
“The unit benefits all women across Pembrokeshire who ever have to undergo any breast cancer care and we have had lots of positive comments from patients.”
One patient said: “I was very impressed with the way you have changed what were rather bleak rooms into a welcoming and comfortable environment for patients to use at a time when we feel very vulnerable.
“While nothing could improve on the care, skill and treatment I received when diagnosed with cancer and your aftercare is very reassuring, these alterations will provide for a more pleasant experience.”
Consultant Mr William Maxwell said: “As a clinician it is a nicer environment to have sensitive face to face discussions. Over the years many people have donated money to the service and it’s through their generosity that this new environment has been developed.”
