New community garden opened in Garnant
Not even the weather could dampen the mood at the official opening of a new community garden at Garnant Family Centre on the weekend.
Rugby hero Shane Williams, recently appointed MBE, was the star attraction on the day which was also attended by dignitaries and many local families.
Family Centre staff pulled out all the stops to make it a day to remember, with a barbecue and refreshments as well as activities and face painting for the children.
The garden, which will be used by the whole community for enjoyment and education, has been made possible through grant funding.
The Environmental Works Project - part of the county council’s Carmarthenshire Homes Standard programme to update council homes and benefit communities – contributed £56,500.
A further £50,000 came from the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG) administered by the Environmental body WREN.
The County Collaboration Fund and Cwmamman Town Council also provided support.
Council Leader and local member, Cllr Kevin Madge, said: “I am delighted that Shane came along to the opening and planted a tree. I’d like to thank the staff, the volunteers, and everyone else who has been involved in this project which has created a wonderful, lasting facility for the people of Garnant.”
The Garnant Family Centre, established in 2002, is based on the Maes Y Bedol housing estate. It is used by many families in the surrounding community, who access the centre for family support, employment skills and training, and general leisure and recreation activities.
Centre Co-ordinator, Eira Wilshere, said: “I’m very pleased about how well the day went - it wouldn’t have been such a great success without the hard work and effort of Garnant Family Centre staff and volunteers. It was very kind of Shane Williams to give up his time to show support. I’m looking forward to holding future events here at the Community Garden, and hope that we will have as much support as we’ve had today.”
Mike Snell, External Affairs Manager for WRG, added: “This Community Garden and Play Area will create a real hub for the local community. WRG’s business is all about helping people to improve their communities in a sustainable way, and this facility is a great example. We hope many people in Garnant and surrounding areas enjoy it for years to come.”
