Caps off to graduating building cadets
It’s caps off to five of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Building Cadets who have graduated after three years on one of the UK’s most innovative training schemes.
Gareth Morris, Andrew Jones, Darren Conway, Wayne Jones and Mathew Keenan donned their caps and gowns to celebrate their achievements.
The Cadets have each gained a foundation degree in Construction Science and Management, with Mathew graduating with honours.
The Building Cadetship scheme is a tri-partnership project run by the council’s Property Services division, Coleg Sir Gâr and the Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd (CCTAL) – collectively known as Constructing Carmarthenshire Together.
The partnership believes it was the first to introduce the scheme to the UK from Australia.
The scheme offers a hands-on approach to the learning experience for higher-level learners opting for professional careers in the building industry.
The Cadets worked towards a bespoke foundation degree whilst also benefitting from practical work experience, with industry placements within the council as well as the private sector including Parc Y Scarlets, the National Botanic Gardens of Wales and Coleg Sir Gâr.
Phil Lumley, the council’s head of Property Services, added: “This scheme provides all-round benefits. Not only does it provide a unique experience for the Cadets, it also provides us with a talented and skilled group of individuals to work alongside our existing staff, whilst also allowing partners in the private sector to tap in to a resource they didn’t have previously.”
With their new qualifications, the Cadets are well-placed to pursue professional careers in the construction industry, such as quantity surveying and site management.
The Cadets have wasted no time in moving on from their studies – two have secured positions as Building Inspectors, one as an estates technician and another as a hydrology technician, all based within the county council.
Cllr Colin Evans, Executive Board Member responsible for Property Services, said: “I’d like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to the five Building Cadets who have taken this opportunity to better themselves, whilst also benefitting the council and industry partners with their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm. I wish them all the very best of luck with their future careers.”
