Ashburnham Golf Club pulling in new members



The Ashburnham Championship Links golf course in Pembrey is pulling in new members.
And a major factor in the membership boost is the dreadful weather.
“It’s something of a curiosity this year, but we have pulled in 26 new members,” said Ashburnham club manager Huw Morgan.
“The reason is simple: no matter what the weather, you can get a game of golf at ‘The Ash’.
“When other courses have to put up the ‘No Play’ signs, we just carry on because we are one of the finest links courses around, with perfect drainage.
“Many new recruits have come to us because of our reputation as a championship links golf course.
“Others have switched from other golf clubs out of frustration, simply because the bad weather has stopped them getting onto the greens and fairways at other clubs.
“At least here, they know that, no matter how gloomy and unseasonal the weather is, they can get a game.”
This year, The Ash was given a Top 10 ranking in a new National Club Golfer guide to Britain’s best value courses.
“We’ve always known that ‘The Ash’ is great value for money and many local golfers are appreciating that fact and signing up,” said Mr Morgan.
“We also have many different packages of golf membership, including corporate membership.
“Give us a ring and we’ll see if we have a deal tailor-made for you.”

The Ashburnham Golf Club will host a number of top events over the coming years –
2013 Men’s Welsh Amateur Championships
2014 Ladies’ British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championships
2015 Men’s Welsh Stroke Play Championships
Club manager Mr Morgan added: “That’s quite a portfolio of events for us at The Ashburnham and we are delighted to be staging them. We can promise a true championship test for each event and the warmest of Welsh welcomes.”
The Ashburnham is the course where the great Welshman and winning Ryder Cup Captain Dai Rees won the PGA title in 1959. It has long been regarded as one of the best links courses in Britain.
The Ashburnham takes its name from the 5th Earl of Ashburnham, who once owned the land and became the club’s inaugural President in 1894.
Two other Ryder Cup Captains have been successful in their playing careers at The Ashburnham in the shape of Bernard Gallacher, who won the Schweppes PGA Championship in 1969, and Sam Torrance, who won the Martini Tournament in 1976.
The Ashburnham has a proud history of hosting many of the major amateur tournaments, having first held a Welsh Amateur Championship in 1904.
Last year, The Ashburnham was the venue for the Men’s Home Internationals.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
