Summer Reading Challenge launched by libraries
Libraries across Carmarthenshire are welcoming children to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge being launched this weekend.
The challenge is aimed at inspiring thousands of families to get involved in the UK's biggest reading event for children in libraries.
Children aged between four and 12 are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the summer holiday and they will get collectable incentives and rewards – plus a certificate for completing the challenge.
The 2012 Summer Reading Challenge is called Story Lab and features four characters: Lex, Rani, Will and Evie who, along with Aesop the ginger lab cat, will be helping Professor Cortex collect and share stories to inspire thousands of young imaginations.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s education executive board member Cllr Keith Davies said: "Reading is not only an essential life skill, but also a great source of enjoyment for children. Instilling a passion for reading early on is crucial to help them develop their skills and our libraries can play a central role in supporting this.
"This project is a fantastic way to get our children reading and I encourage everyone to pop along to their local library this summer to take advantage of what’s on offer."
An interactive Story Lab website (www.story-lab.org.uk) enables children to talk about their favourite books and reading experiences with top authors and illustrators.
The challenge is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities. They can read any books they like providing they are borrowed from the library such as factual books, stories, joke books, picture books – and audio books and e-books count too.
Libraries will also hold special events during the holidays to help celebrate London 2012 Olympics.
Cllr Davies added: “For parents who haven’t joined yet, it’s the perfect opportunity – anyone can join a library and it's all free. The Summer Reading Challenge is just one of many exciting schemes public libraries are developing to help children develop a love of reading, gain confidence and get new skills.”
