It's bag time for Carmarthenshire!
Blue and black bags are now being delivered to householders across Carmarthenshire.
Each year the council supplies a roll of black bags and two rolls of blue bags to homes on the kerbside recycling scheme.
Residents are given one roll of black bags only (52 bags) as they are being encouraged to reduce as much of their waste as possible in a bid to cut the amount of waste going to landfill and recycle as much as they can.
Blue bags are used for recycling paper, cardboard, cans and plastic and if residents run out at any time during the year more will be delivered.
Each roll now has a luminous green/yellow stripe on one of the bags towards the end so that when that particular blue bag is put out for collection the crews know they need to leave more blue bags.
The aim is to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle.
There are now around 75,000 households out of approximately 82,000 in Carmarthenshire that benefit from kerbside recycling.
The green bin/blue bag scheme which also includes the collection of food waste for composting was launched in February 2008 and has been a huge success with residents now recycling more than 40 per cent of their waste.
However, this figure needs to increase to 52 per cent by 2012/13 and Carmarthenshire also has landfill targets to meet or face hefty fines so it is vitally important householders keep up the good work.
Head of Street Scene David Hughes said: “Bags are now being delivered to households across Carmarthenshire, however I would ask residents to be patient if they haven’t received any yet as it will take a couple of weeks to get round all areas.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle, there is no limit as to how many blue bags householders can put out for collection and as they get to the end of a roll more will be delivered by the crews.”
