Carmarthenshire adopts development strategy

Carmarthenshire councillors have adopted a strategy for sustainable development of the county in the future.
This month’s meeting of the full county council voted to back the Preferred Strategy for the Local Development Plan which sets out the strategic planning policies for the county.
The council voted for Option 1 of five which is for sustainable distribution of development, which encourages the dispersal of employment, housing and other types of development to identified settlements and village groups or clusters. This allows a range of opportunities for growth across the county, whilst protecting the natural environment and limiting the need to travel.
The other options were for urban growth, with most new housing and employment development steered towards the urban centres of Carmarthenshire; dispersal, which stresses the distribution of housing, employment and other forms of development on a broadly equal basis between all identified settlements within the county without necessarily taking account of the availability of services or facilities; no strategy, with the council having no role in directing or guiding development; and a market-led option where development would probably be alongside the major roads in the county and at key junctions, notably the M4, A40 and A48.
