Trinity launches 'Jesus' book
A new book by academics at Trinity University College is already gaining international attention.
Jesus Beyond Christianity: The Classic Texts, which has just been released this month by Oxford University Press, has been edited by Head of School Dr Gregory A. Barker and Stephen Gregg – with a contribution by Dr Amjad Hussain.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an honorary fellow of Trinity University College, has written the foreword.
The book brings together in one volume controversial texts on the meaning of Jesus in Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim traditions.
Remarking on this volume, Tutu says that this book ‘…is an expression of our human family. The readings are astonishingly diverse, reflecting…different views of divine truth.’
Dr. Gregory A. Barker says that the book is far from a beauty contest when it comes to views of Jesus: ‘Readers may be surprised just how much Jesus is both admired and vilified by many religious traditions through the centuries. There are sharp criticisms as well as deep and creative insights.’
This is the first time that such a diverse set of readings has been brought together in one book; readers will find a number of interesting features such as fresh translations of important texts, ‘Key-Issues’ Introductions, Questions for discussion and Guides for further reading.
The book is available in both paperback and hardback editions.
