Carmarthenshire recognises sporting heroes
The great and the good of Carmarthenshire’s richness production line of sporting personalities have been rewarded at a 12th annual awards ceremony.
Rugby legend, Gerald Davies who hails from Llansaint, paralympianm Lisa Pudner and international cricketer Jeff Jones were admitted into the county’s hall of fame sporting register.
The accolade of the sports personality of the year went to David Greene for his phenomenal progress as a 400mtr hurdler on the athletic track.
Organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sports Development Unit in partnership with the Carmarthenshire Local Sports Council the ceremony is organised to promote, recognise and reward those athletes, coaches and volunteers who achieve and who contribute towards the continued success of sport in the County.
County executive board member for regeneration Cllr Clive Scourfield said at the ceremony at the Stradey Park Hotel: “This year there were more than 100 nominations received making the short listing process for the panel extremely challenging because the standard was exceptionally high.
“Our new hall of fame entrees have made a massive contribution to the legacy of sport and are an inspiration for the next generation of sporting Champions, not only within Carmarthenshire but on an international level.
“Carmarthenshire has a rich golden seam of sporting legends and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.
“Carmarthenshire also boosts a great number of individuals who give their time and energy into ensuring that young players have the opportunity to train and compete. Over the last eleven years of these Awards, Carmarthenshire has been able to formally recognise these great individuals through the Volunteer of the Year and Outstanding Services to Sport categories.
“One individual in particular, has recently been recognised across Great Britain for his decades of dedication to junior football in the County. Arthur Jones was nominated for, and won the highly prestigious BBC Cymru Wales Unsung hero award as part of the Welsh Sports Personality awards for 2009. Following this, Arthur travelled to Sheffield and on 14th December, was in contention for the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero award. Whilst Arthur did not win this award, just being nominated and attending the awards evening was a fantastic achievement and well deserved recognition for Arthur’s commitment to junior football in Carmarthenshire.
Carmarthenshire Council Chairman Tyssul Evans welcomes three more inductees to the county’s illustrious Sporting legends Hall of Fame. They are paralympian Lisa Pudner, international cricketer Jeff Jones and broadcaster, journalist, Wales and Lions rugby legend, Gerald Davies. Pic: Jeff Connell.
