West Wales concert fans will have a double treat to celebrate St David’s Day this year.
Llanelli concert promoter Cerith Owens and Loud Applause Productions are planning two concerts to celebrate our Patron Saint’s Day.
The first will be on February 27– 7.00pm, Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli.
The second will be on March 5 - 7.00pm, Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen.
“We’ve managed to create two great ‘bookend’ events around St David’s Day celebrations,” said Mr Owens.
“It means that this year we give people the chance to see two great West Wales events celebrating St David’s Day!
The Llanelli gala concert on February 27 will feature Côr Meibion Llanelli Male Choir and Dunvant Male Choir with Côr Ysgol Iau Llangennech, soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies, plus the young up and coming singer Jordan Williams.
The evening will be hosted by the ever popular BBC TV and radio personality Garry Owen.
The Carmarthen celebration concert on March 5 will feature – Côr Meibion De Cymru, Côr Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin and international baritone Gary Griffiths, from Burry Port.
Again, the evening will be hosted by the excellent Garry Owen.
The Llanelli audience will be delighted to welcome back to the local stage mezzo-soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies, who was born in Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire.
The recipient of an Independent Opera Voice Scholarship in 2014, Myfanwy recently performed at a Christmas concert at Greenfield Chapel, Llanelli.
Myfanwy has studied at the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Previously, she gained a Distinction and DipRAM in Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy of Music and a BMus (Hons) in Vocal Studies from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Myfanwy has performed the roles of Penelope (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) for the Alexander Gibson Opera School, and Pompea (The Little Green Swallow) for British Youth Opera.
Opera scene appearances include as Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Dido (Les Troyens), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare), Mistress Quickly (Falstaff), Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia), Irene (Tamerlano), Bradamante (Alcina) and Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
She gives regular oratorio, recital and gala performances, is a guest artist with many Welsh male choirs and has appeared in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Brussels Cathedral, Millennium Centre, and the Vatican.
Recent performances include in Elgar’s Music Makers and The Dream of Gerontius, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem.
Television engagements have included appearances on S4C, on Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol, Wedi 3, Wedi 7 and Noson Lawen.
Myfanwy is a winner of the W Towyn Roberts Memorial Award and the Llais Llwyfan Llambed Award, and was named ‘Voice of the Future’ at Llangollen International Festival.
She has also been a finalist in the Welsh Singers Competition at St David’s Hall, the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award, London Welsh Young Singer of the Year, MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year, and Dunraven Welsh Young Singer of the Year.
The Carmarthen audience on March 5 will be delighted to welcome ‘local hero’ Gary Griffiths as the star soloist.
Winner of the Welsh Singers Competition in 2012, Gary was a finalist representing Wales in the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.
He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where, in 2009, he won the prestigious Gold Medal Competition.
At the Welsh National Opera, where he began as an Associate Artist, he made a critically acclaimed debut in 2011 as Guglielmo (Così fan tutte).
His other roles with the company include Cecil (Maria Stuarda), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Claudio (Béatrice et Bénédict), and Schaunard in a new production of La Bohème (for which he was awarded the Welsh Theatre Critics’ Award).
He recently sang Il Conte (Le nozze di Figaro) for Wiesbaden Opera, Maximillian (Candide) at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, The Executioner (Ines de Castro) for Scottish Opera, Ned Keene (Peter Grimes) for Grange Park Opera, Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) for New Zealand Festival Opera and Malatesta (Don Pasquale) for the Longborough Festival Opera. Earlier roles have included Germano (La Scala di Seta) for British Youth Opera; Dog/Innkeeper (The Cunning Little Vixen) for Grange Park Opera; and L’Incognito (L’Assedio di Calais), Le Comte (Chérubin), Mr. Gedge (Albert Herring), Arsenio (La Spinabla) and Marquis de la Force (les Dialogues des Carmelites) at the Guildhall School Opera.
Operatic engagements this season include a return to the Wiesbaden State Opera for Ford (Falstaff), to the New Zealand Festival Opera for Marcello (La Bohème) and to the Welsh National Opera.
His recent concert appearances include Berlioz ‘Les Troyens’ with Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra, Grieg’s Peer Gynt with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Nikolaj Znaider, Fauré Requiem with John Wilson and the RTE Concert Orchestra, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with the Berliner Kantorei, Mozart’s Requiem with the orchestra of the Welsh National Opera and Christoph Poppen, a gala performance at the National Eisteddfod of Wales with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra, and Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast at the Barbican with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins.
A committed recitalist, he has appeared at the Oxford Lieder Festival with Sholto Kynoch, the Cowbridge Music Festival with Joseph Middleton, King’s Place with Iain Burnside, the Ludlow English Song Weekend with Simon Lepper, Chipping Campden Music, in Harrogate, Dore Abbey and St. David’s Hall, Cardiff.
In recording, he appears on Catrin Finch’s Lullabies CD for Deutsche Grammophon and on his solo album ‘Début’ which was released earlier this year. Soon to be released, is a recording of Mendelssohn Songs with Malcolm Martineau for Champs Hills Records.
