Smiles all around at Johnston CP School in Haverfordwest

Staff and pupils at Johnston CP School have recently been awarded their gold badge for three years commitment to the Designed to Smile Oral Health Improvement programme.
Tara Gover, Designed to Smile Coordinator, said: “It is a pleasure to award Johnston CP School with this award. Staff, pupils and their parents have fully engaged with us to ensure tooth brushing takes place here every day.”
Current evidence shows that daily tooth brushing with a fluoride tooth paste reduces the risk of developing caries by up to 30%. Tooth brushing in targeted schools is encouraged to be done in addition to twice daily brushing at home.
The school also benefits from Oral Health Education to year 4 pupils and dental home packs twice a year for each pupil.
Liz Western, All Wales Healthy and Sustainable School Scheme, said: “Healthy Schools aim to help children and young people develop life skills, knowledge, understanding, attitudes and values. This includes equipping children with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing including nutrition, appropriate hygiene and keeping their bodies healthy. Participation in Designed to Smile supports the work of Healthy Schools.”
Other settings recently in receipt of Gold awards are: St Mary's RC Flying Start Centre, Pennar CP School and Manorbier VC School.
