Heavy rain causes flooding at Llanelli Town Hall

Contingency plans have been put in place to prevent further damage from rainwater which flooded parts of Llanelli Town Hall last week.
Heavy rain in the early hours of Friday morning breached the temporary roof covering being used whilst the building is undergoing renovations, resulting in water leaking in to first floor offices and meeting rooms.
Contractors John Weaver Ltd, who are undertaking the renovation works on behalf of the council, are clearing water and working to prevent further damage.
Cllr Hazel Evans, Executive Board Member with responsibility for Property Services, said: “Contractors have been on site for some time undertaking essential renovation work to remodel the roof because of ongoing problems with rainwater leaks due to its age and design.
“However, the temporary roof covering did not withstand the sheer volume of rain that fell in the early hours of Friday morning, and unfortunately water did leak in to some of the first floor rooms.
“We are working with the contractors to clean up the water and were prepared for further heavy rain on Monday.
“Staff have temporarily relocated, and access may be restricted to town hall visitors for a few weeks. The ground floor is unaffected, and we are speaking with couples who have booked wedding ceremonies in the main room which we expect will go ahead as planned if the couples so wish.”
Staff from the council’s Property Services team, part of the Environment department, are overseeing the renovation of the grade II listed building.
The roof is being remodelled and lead and steel lintels in the clock tower are being replaced.
Work to repair damage to windows and internal walls due to previous leaks are also being undertaken.
Council building inspectors have worked closely with CADW throughout.
