The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star -
The concert diary is filling up fast for Côr Meibion Llanelli’s 50th anniversary year.
The choir has agreed to make a return visit to Hersham in Surrey on Saturday, July 12.
“Our visit there last year was a great success, with the organisers saying they could have sold tickets for the venue twice over,” said choir chairman Mel Harries.
“On our last visit we raised a huge amount of cash for the Royal Marsden cancer hospital. We are hoping to do the same again this year as it is a very worthy cause.”
Mr Harries added the choir had also received an invitation from Llanelli MP Nia Griffith to perform at the Houses of Parliament in London on Tuesday, April 1.
“It is a very prestigious invitation and we are looking forward to performing for a select audience of MPs and members of the House of Lords.
Meanwhile, the Côr Meibion Llanelli organising committee has finalised dates for the choir’s trip to Austria later this year.
The choir will depart on November 20 and return on November 24.
The schedule will include a performance in Salzburg and a concert at nearby Oberndorf, the birthplace of the Christmas Carol Silent Night.
“It’s a wonderful honour for the choir,” said choir chairman Mr Harries.
“Our 50th anniversary year is going to be full of memorable occasions. The trip to Austria promises to be an extra-special highlight.
“Meanwhile, we will shortly be in a position to name the special guest who will be performing at our annual concert in September.
“We’ve secured a big name attraction, so it really is a case of ‘watch this space!’
“This is a great year to be a part of the choir and we are always on the look-out for new members.
“Anyone interested can pop along to one of our weekly rehearsal sessions to meet members and get a feel for what it would be like to be part of our 50th anniversary year.”
Côr Meibion Llanelli rehearsals are at Furnace Community Hall in Llanelli, 7pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
There will be a special St David’s Day Gala Concert at Ffwrnes on Saturday, March 1.
The concert will feature The Three Welsh Tenors, the combined Côr Meibion Llanelli and Bridgend Male Choirs, Parti Llwchwr Ladies Choir and the BBC’s Garry Owen as compere.
The Three Welsh Tenors are Aled Hall, Alun Rhys-Jenkins and Rhys Meirion.
The Llanelli Choral Society are preparing for an exciting choral and orchestral performance in April when they perform Britten’s Saint Nicholas and classical highlights by the British Sinfonietta Orchestra.
Future performances include participating in the Hywel Choir’s Last Night of the Proms, performing in the Festival of Remembrance at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall and an exciting Autumn performance of Carmina Burana at Y Ffwrnes.
Burry Port Male Voice Choir will be taking part in a Cymanfa Ganu (community singing event) at 7pm on March 9 at Jerusalem Chapel, Burry Port.
The event will raise funds for the Burry Port National Eisteddfod committee in advance of the 2014 Carmarthenshire Eisteddfod to be held in Llanelli. The event has been organised by the Eisteddfod committee and the choir will help boost the audience numbers.
