Your chance to join the famous 'Hywel' choirs

Queens and Princes have heard and honoured them. Prime Ministers have praised them. The Pope has enjoyed them. Audiences in over 120 countries have listened to them.
The exciting opportunity to be a young singer in their ranks is currently open to all young people.
Wales’ exciting Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers are currently opening its doors to new singers aged 7 – 17 years as it launches its new 2012-2013 concert repertoire and plans.
“If you love singing then join!” is the excited advice of 10 year old Caitlin Smith of St. Mary’s School, Llanelli – a three-year veteran of the Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers.
If the joint experiences of all the Hywel choristers were crammed into one year then it would shadow the itinerary and experiences of the busiest of celebrity pop stars - 25 international concert tours. Television broadcasts across 120 countries. Royal performances to Her Majesty The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH The Prince of Wales. Performing at The Vatican for His Holiness The Pope. Concert performances across global cities of the world – New York, London, Rome, Boston, Prague, Berlin, Toronto, Vienna and many more.
The choir has also enjoyed accolades from HRH The Prince of Wales, Tony Blair, John Major, Catherine Zeta Jones, Judy Dench, Michael Howard to name but a few. Last week, the choristers received a personal letter from Her Majesty The Queen with good wishes for the year ahead as part of the choir’s anniversary celebrations.
The Llanelli-based choir members are busy learning an exciting new repertoire in advance of its forthcoming performances. Its new concert repertoire, themed “Time Travel – A Musical Journey”, takes choristers and audiences on an exciting musical journey of singing spanning 400 years of song from the world of film and cinema, classical and opera, sacred, international folk, rock and pop, gospel and Broadway and West End musicals.
The choir looks forward to an exciting concert season with forthcoming performances planned at home, across Carmarthenshire, Wales and England. One of the forthcoming performances for the choir is their own-hosted and ever popular Llanelli Proms on Saturday 19 May where the Hywel choristers will join forces with one of the UK’s leading military bands, The Band and Bugles of The Rifles and with the massed voices of the famous Dunvant Male Choir and Llanelli Choral Society and singing star Gweneth Ann-Jeffers all under the baton of John Hywel Williams.
“As we launch our new 2012-2013 concert programme, this is a great opportunity for young singers to join us”, explains the choir’s Director of Development, Jeremy Hywel Williams.
“There are no auditions to join the choir just the love of singing and the willingness to learn. We are proud to have choristers from schools across Carmarthenshire and neighbouring Swansea area.”
Chorister, 10 year old Caitlin Smith (pictured above), of St. Mary’s School, Llanelli, shares her experiences of being a member of the Hywel Choir.
When and why did you join the choir?
“I joined the choir three years ago just before my 8th birthday. I just love singing. Singing make me feel happy. My Mum (Angela Medway-Smith) was also in the choir when she was young.”
What do you enjoy about the choir?
“Loads of things! I meet lots of new people. We learn and sing new songs. We do different things. I really enjoy the concerts.”
What’s the favourite concert you’ve done?
“My favourite concert is the Llanelli Proms. I like the big band, the different acts and all the flags being waved.”
What’s a rehearsal like?
“We rehearse on Friday evenings. We practice and learn lots of songs and some in different languages. I enjoy when we sit in a circle and do fun singing exercises. We sing classical songs, songs from different countries, songs from musicals and modern songs as well.”
What’s your favourite song?
“I sing alto and my favourite song is Somewhere over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz. I like the words, I like the music and I like the alto line.”
What would be your advice to potential choristers?
“If you love singing then join! It’s an opportunity to do things you like, to travel to different places and make new friends.”

The Hywel Choristers will next be appearing at St. Illtyd’s Church Pembrey on Saturday 28 April and in the flag-waving Llanelli Proms at the Selwyn Samuel Centre on Saturday 19 May. The choir rehearses once a week at 6pm Friday evening at Glenalla Civic Hall, Llanelli.
