Carmarthen AFC celebrate much-needed win
Carmarthen Town 3 Airbus UK Broughton 1
On a sunny and warm afternoon, it was the home side who came out on top of what was classed as a ‘sixpointer’ as both sides were near the bottom of the Welsh Premier League.
Manager Tomi Morgan was delighted with the result and was quick to praise his players.
“They have worked really hard recently and were deserving of the little bit of luck we had with the own goal. I’m sure that the squad will grow in confidence after this performance.”
It was the visitors who took the lead in this game when Ryan Edwards was allowed to cut inside the defence and score within the first quarter of an hour of the game. Airbus have yet to win this season but had drawn five of their eight games. Therefore getting a lead in this fixture was of vital importance.
The Einsley Harris Factor and Clothing sponsored Carmarthen Town side did look shaky at times during this initial period but then lady luck smiled on the team for the first time this season. A long cross to the far post was inexplicably headed into his own goal by Adam Worton to put the home side level after twenty two minutes.
The home side immediately started to play far more confidently. Once again Nicky Palmer was the driving force in midfield aided by Geraint Passmore. They could have gone ahead after twenty eight minutes when Nick Harrhy’s cross from the left was headed against the bar by Jack Christopher with the Airbus keeper, Niki-Lee Bulmer, beaten.
Airbus did threaten occasionally and Michael Lewis continued his rich vein of form with one fine block from Ian Sheridan but y now Lee Bevan and Richard Hughes were beginning to dominate in the middle of the defence which allowed both full backs, Lewis Jones and Cledan Davies to attack at every opportunity.
The Old Gold did take the lead in the thirty fifth minute with a wonderful effort by Harrhy. He was brought down approximately twenty five yards from goal and took the free kick himself. His left footed effort cleared the defensive wall leaving Bulmer stranded and nestled in the back of the net. This goal will be a definite contender for the goal of the month.
Then just before half time the visiting defence conceded an unnecessary penalty. Up stepped captain Tim Hicks to convert coolly from the spot. Unfortunately one of the home forwards had encroached into the box and the kick had to be retaken. Hicks replaced the ball and proceeded to make it 3-1 to the home side with another confident effort.
Quite understandably it was the visiting side who forced the pace at the start of the second half. But having weathered that storm quite comfortably it was the home side which looked most like scoring. With Christopher and Steffan Williams combining well chances came to both only to see their efforts pass inches the wrong side of the post.
By now the home defence were the dominant force in the game with home side looking more likely to get a fourth goal rather than the away team getting a second.
Morgan gave a first team debut to Rhys Dalling and he was most unfortunate not to score in his first senior game for the Town as they continued to attack at every opportunity. The final whistle and second home win of the season was greeted with a sense of relief but also a renewed sense of hope for the coming months.
This win takes Town above their North Walian opponents in the league and level on points with Aberystwyth Town and Newtown.
Carmarthen Town (v Airbus UK Broughton) Lewis: Jones, Hughes, Bevan, Davies; Hicks (capt), Palmer, Passmore (Howard): Harrhy (Dalling), Christopher, Williams (Thomas). Subs (not used) Wilson (GK), Berry.
