George Hotel sponsors Oxjam Brecon




The Oxjam Brecon “Takeover Day” returns for a third year on Saturday, October 15. Tickets are £7 in aid of Oxfam GB and are on sale now at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon (01874 611622).
The charity music festival is sponsored by The George Hotel, Brecon, owned by the award-winning Llandeilo-based brewers Evan-Evans of Llandeilo and BRFM Community radio, based in Brynmawr.
Headline acts include Revoker and The Last Republic, alongside Under The Driftwood Tree and Pamela Wyn Shannon.
The full line up has now been announced on Oxjam Brecon’s website at www.oxjambrecon.com, where online tickets are also available.
Les Rees, Manager of The George Hotel, said:"We are very pleased to be supporting Oxjam Brecon - the festival has got a terrific line up with big acts alongside up-and-coming bands. All proceeds are in aid of a worthy cause, Oxfam GB.“
The main Oxjam “Takeover Days” now take place in 37 towns in the month of October, with Brecon being easily the smallest.
Oxjam Brecon has raised more than £10,000 for Oxfam over the last two years and is targetting £7,000 this year.
Takeover manager Stewart Webb said:“It's been great to have had the support of our two sponsors over the last few months. Oxjam is certainly growing fast. We have a great line up for October 15th with 50 bands appearing across five great venues - a single £7 ticket gets you in to them all."
Musically, there really is something for everyone at Oxjam Brecon – the venues have around 10 acts each and are loosely themed by genre for the first time.
The festival launches at 1.30pm at The George Hotel which has a strong Indie/alternative programme including The Last Republic and The Undivided.

The festival’s opening band is Italian success story Sunday Recovery who have sold millions in their home country but are little known in Britain.
The Gremlin has five-piece rockers The Varsity Boys and Aberdare’s Red Room Therapy in a strong line up, whilst The Market Tavern has an eclectic mix encompassing everything from ska punk (Beneath The Reef) to Green Man Festival surf-folkers Under The Driftwood Tree.

Folk and acoustic Fans will be looking forward to seeing Pamela Wyn Shannon, Rob Lear and Just Harrie at The Con Club, whilst Theatr Brycheiniog has a strong metal/rock based programme with Innovence and others supporting Merthyr metal 4 piece Revoker.
Angus Kings, fundraising co-ordinator said:"It’s important that we focus exclusively on original music for our takeover day but covers bands are most welcome at our many pre-events."
There will be 11,000 volunteers across the country helping Oxjam during the month of October.

Former Gower MP Gareth Wardell was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel. 'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
