Roast beef dinners on the menu for schools
Schoolchildren across Carmarthenshire will be treating their taste buds to a traditional roast on Wednesday, in celebration of the Food for Life Partnership’s second annual National Roast Dinner Day.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Catering Service is preparing to dish up thousands of roast beef dinners as part of the event on Wednesday, October 12.
The roast dinner already features on the three-week rolling menus in all of the county’s primary schools, but it is hoped the event will encourage children to think about where their food comes from, how it is grown and the way it is cooked.
Sandra Weigel, Catering Services Manager, said: “The humble roast dinner has always been a firm favourite in schools and is enjoyed by thousands of children every week.
“Taking part in National Roast Dinner Day is an ideal way to encourage children to become more aware of the food they eat, and what they need to eat in order to have a varied and balanced diet.”
As part of Carmarthenshire’s Local Sustainable Food Strategy, the catering team procures, where possible, the vast majority of its food from local producers.
The menus put emphasis on fresh home-cooked food, with reduced salt.
Cllr Gwynne Wooldridge, Executive Board Member for Education and Children, said: “Taking part in such an event is just another example of how our Catering Service strives to encourage children to become more aware of what they eat.
“I do hope the day goes well, and that the children enjoy a nutritious and hearty meal.”
