Llanelli multiplex cinema plans go forward
Plans for a multiplex cinema and hotel in the centre of Llanelli will be considered by Carmarthenshire planners on Thursday.
The county council planning committee will discuss the application by HDD (Llanelli) Ltd for a mixed use development including a six-screen multiplex cinema, a 53-bedroom hotel, restaurants and bars, retail units including a convenience store and office accommodation.
The scheme also involves relocation of the bus interchange, together with 239 car parking spaces and associated public realm enhancement works at land at Upper Park Street and Island Place.
The development provides for a new improved bus station which will replace the current Island Place bus station. The bus station has been designed to avoid any reversing manoeuvres and access and egress is via Stepney Place.
The development provides for a new 245 space car park which will replace the 142 space Island Place car park. The development is conveniently located close to Llanelli's other town centre car parks.
Carmarthenshire County Council prepared a draft brief for the redevelopment of the Eastern Quarter. The brief sought a commercial development to re-invigorate the area and the development brief included a concept plan emphasising the need to deliver retail/leisure as an extension of the town centre; good vehicular and pedestrian links; new car parking provision; enhanced bus station provision; a landmark building which acts as a gateway to Llanelli from the east; a focal point in the town; and a scheme that would respect the listed buildings.
A competition was held following which the design and bid submitted by the current applicants, Henry Davidson Developments was judged to have offered the best solution to the brief.
An officers’ report is recommending approval of the application.
