Carmarthenshire people share care and support stories


People who receive care or support in Carmarthenshire have been sharing their stories as part of a campaign to highlight the role of social care services in the county and inform the public about the services available.
In a series of short videos being shared on social media, service users have explained how they are being supported to live as independently as possible. Providers have also spoken about how they support people in need.
The stories can be found on Carmarthenshire County Council’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages by searching #OurStories.
The council has also produced a short film to demonstrate the range of social care services available to help people who are in need of practical support due to illness, disability, old age or their vulnerability.
Support can be as simple as having a personal assistant to provide help around the home, or structural changes to help people live safely and comfortably in their home.
Over the last year, 4,891 adults have received commissioned social care services in Carmarthenshire, with a focus on helping people sustain their independence for as long as possible.
Jake Morgan, Director For Communities, has laid out how the council plans to continue delivering services in the coming year as part of his annual report, including how the authority will meet the requirements of the new Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act.
The plan includes closer integration with Hywel Dda University Health Board and other partners in order to achieve improved well-being outcomes.
Cllr Jane Tremlett, Executive Board Member for Social Care, said: “The #OurStories campaign provides an inspiring and insightful look at how people are supported to live full and active lives in Carmarthenshire. We are so grateful to everyone who has taken part.
“The changing landscape of social care services and our aging population sets its own challenges for the delivery of quality care, but our success in meeting that challenge has already been recognised and we will continue to work together with our partners to improve and adapt.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
