Carmarthen Mayor’s Fun Run races a huge success
From toddlers to seasoned veterans, they all turned out for the annual Carmarthen Mayor’s Fun Run races staged in the town centre on Bank Holiday Monday.
Runners of all shapes and sizes took to the streets of Carmarthen, helping to raise cash for many different charities.
“It was a great, fun occasion, with the accent firmly on everyone having fun,” said Carmarthen Mayor Councillor Barry Williams.
“This is the 35th year for the races to be held in Carmarthen and each year it is a delight to see hundreds of families enjoy the experience. The fun run races go from strength to strength.
“The toddlers race, where mums and dads joined their more athletic youngsters around the town centre circuit, was great fun.
“There was keen competition in many of the school-age races and a decent field of nearly 250 athletes for the main 5K race over three laps of the town centre circuit.”
Everyone who finished received a special medal.
The winner of the 5K race was Jack Tremlett, who is proving to be something of a course specialist. He won in 2014 and finished second in 2015.

Many of the runners were raising money for their own favourite charities.
All competitors contributed towards the official race charities through their entry fees.
The charities this year were –
Air Training Corps, Carmarthen Girl Guides, Carmarthen and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind and Carmarthen Night Light.
The Mayor added: “I am grateful for everyone for taking part and helping to raise money for worthy causes. A special word of thanks goes to race organiser Noelwyn Daniel and his brilliant team of volunteers. This is an event full of community spirit and it is great to see everyone pulling together to make it an annual success.”
Race organiser Mr Daniel said: “We had nearly 700 entries in the different events and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the occasion – even if the weather was a little damp.
“There were more than 100 in the nursery and reception mini fun run, the race where we allow mum and dads to run with their children. It’s always a great treat to watch the little ones enjoying the run around the town. It’s something of a nightmare for our race commentators as there are so many numbers and names to pick out from the crowd but it is great fun.
“It was also great to see so many team entries this year. In particular, there was plenty of inter-departmental rivalry from the teams from Carmarthenshire Council.
“Huge thanks go to our marshalls and volunteers who worked so hard to make it all happen. Thanks also to our sponsors, including our principal supporters, Gwalia Surveyors.”
