Health Board commitment to improved facilities for cancer patients at Withybush Hospital

Hywel Dda University Health Board (UHB) reconfirmed its commitment to provide improved facilities for cancer patients at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, at its latest Board meeting.
The new Director of Operations/Deputy Chief Executive Joe Teape presented a paper outlining the background to the project and recently agreed governance structures to ensure the work is driven forward at pace.
As senior responsible officer for the development, Mr Teape confirmed that clinician-led discussions are taking place on the future model for Withybush Hospital to maintain 24/7 acute medicine on site.
Mr Teape noted the importance of considering plans for the Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) and Ward 10 as part of these wider discussions to ensure the most appropriate service model for patients.
The University Health Board has committed to share the recommendations of its clinician-led discussions, including the most appropriate location for CDU and Ward 10 services, with stakeholders and charity partners later this month.
Final plans and costings will be drawn up before the end of December 2015, following staff and stakeholder engagement in November.
Any shortfall in funding for the CDU will need to be identified and met in line with these final plans and further discussion and approval will be required to commence the Ward 10 work when plans and costings for this part of the project are available.
Chief Executive Steve Moore said: “I have met with many of the charities involved in this development and acknowledge their frustrations on the time it has taken the University Health Board and its predecessors to get to where we are today. The paper being brought to Board today is intended to demonstrate our firm commitment to the project and our intention to drive the development forward as soon as possible to provide improved facilities for cancer patients at Withybush Hospital”.
