Triage and Treat service now available in selected pharmacies in Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire

A new Triage and Treat service is now available at selected pharmacies in Aberaeron, Aberporth, Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Newport.
The Triage and Treat service can help you if you have a low level injury rather than having to visit a doctor or an A&E department.
The service is provided by a pharmacist or a member of the pharmacy team who has had special training and can be used by visitors, holiday makers and local residents, especially when the GP practice is not open.
The types of injuries that can be treated under the service are:
  • Minor abrasions, superficial cuts and wounds
  • Sprains and strains
  • Eye complaints such as sand in the eye
  • Removal of items from the skin such as a splinter or shell
  • Minor burns including sunburn
When accidents happen or illnesses take hold, Triage and Treat is available, no appointment needed from:
  • Aberporth - Penrhyn Pharmacy, SA43 2EU, 9am–5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am–12.30pm Saturday, 01239 810228
  • Aberaeron - Lloyds Pharmacy, 2 Alban Square, SA46 0AD, 9am–6pm Monday to Friday and 9am–5.30pm Saturday, 01545 570324

  • Aberystwyth - Morrisons Pharmacy, Llanbadarn Fawr, SY23 3TL, 9am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-4pm Sunday, 01970 617108

  • Newport - Newport Pharmacy, 2 Market Street, SA42 0PH, 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm Saturday, 01239 820239
When you arrive at the pharmacy you will:
  • Be asked for you agreement (consent) to be examined
  • Have a triage (assessment) of your condition
  • If appropriate, be treated or advised about where you should go for your treatment
  • Your own GP will be told about any treatment given
  • You will also be asked to let us know your views on the service.
Elaine Lorton, Assistant Director of Primary Care Services at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “Following the success of Triage and Treat in other parts of the health board I am pleased that pharmacies in north Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion have introduced this service.
“Community pharmacies are a fantastic local resource providing general advice and information about different health conditions. You can talk to your community pharmacist about your health and they can advise on what you can do to care for yourself which could avoid a trip to the doctor.”
Please be aware that Triage and Treat is provided free under the NHS but you will need to pay for any aftercare you may need, such as over the counter pain relief.
Remember to Choose Well before using any NHS service. More information can be found at www.hywelddahb.wales.nhs.uk/choosewell or by calling NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47.
