Rugby World Cup taken on a trip to Dylan's Laugharne


It was a case of rugby world cup fever when more than 100 children greeted rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup, to The Dylan Thomas Boathouse.
An entourage of three vehicles escorted the glass backed Landrover Defender carrying the cup on Sunday as part of the rugby world cup trophy tour.
Children buzzed with excitement as it arrived at the Writing Shed for 2.30pm before being welcomed into the boathouse to a display of rugby themed activity.
The air was electric as rugby loving youngsters got to touch the cup, posing for photographs at the same time.
During the hour and a half celebrations the council’s sport and leisure team delivered a rugby themed Actif Storytime session to children from St Clears, Laugharne and Whitland rugby teams.
Although limited access meant the event was private, those that did turn up had their pictures taken with the famous trophy.
The council’s principal arts officer, Eleri Retallick said: “It was a truly momentous occasion to have the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup trophy visit the Writing Shed and Dylan Thomas Boathouse. I am sure Dylan Thomas would have created an appropriate piece of writing had he seen this trophy in his writing shed. Here’s hoping that the players involved in this fantastic tournament will have creativity and flair on the playing field. The world awaits.”
The trophy tour will have travelled through Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Wales and England before arriving at Twickenham Stadium on September 18 ahead of the opening ceremony of Rugby World Cup 2015.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: We are so proud to have hosted the world-famous Webb Ellis Cup at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse the trophy has brought people of all ages together in our community to celebrate this important occasion and we are all counting down with excitement to Rugby World Cup 2015.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
