New Welsh Medium primary school for Burry Port and Pembrey


A new £12million Welsh medium primary school is being built to replace the current Ysgol Parc y Tywyn at Burry Port.
Plans are now in hand to start work in August 2016, following the Welsh Government’s recent decision to lift stopper notices preventing development in the area.
The new school is one of six elements planned, which includes housing and infrastructure at the former Grillo site; housing alongside the site; a commercial leisure development at Burry Port East; and employment space alongside Silver Terrace.
The proposed date for completion of the new school, which will serve the catchment areas of Burry Port and Pembrey, will be March 2017.
It will be built on the former site of Spencer Davies Engineering, adjacent to land at Burrows Terrace.
Pupil numbers have increased at the school over the years, making the existing site undersized and restricted.
A number of mobile classrooms have been installed to accommodate the increased numbers.
The new school will provide a replacement fit for purpose Welsh Medium Primary School, along with Welsh Medium Nursery provision.
Total cost of the project is £12million with funding earmarked from the County Council’s Modernising Education Programme and the Welsh Government’s 21stCentury Schools initiative.
Business cases will need to be produced and approved before the funding package is finalised.
Executive Board Member for Education Cllr Gareth Jones said: “This is really positive news for the area, it is something that has been needed for some time, and we are delighted to be able to make progress.
“Demand for Welsh medium education provision in Burry Port and Pembrey has increased considerably, particularly over recent years, and this new school will provide children with the first class accommodation they deserve.
“I also welcome the nursery provision which will serve the people in these catchment areas.”

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career.
