New Chemotherapy Day Unit at Withybush Hospital
A new Chemotherapy Day Unit at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, is a step closer following the first meeting of a new project group which will oversee the development.
The project group, with representation from Hywel Dda University Health Board, local charity Adam’s Bucketful of Hope Appeal and Hywel Dda Community Health Council (CHC), provides an opportunity to work together to provide chemotherapy services in a modern facility in Haverfordwest.
The people of Pembrokeshire have been raising money for this unit in memory of Adam Evans-Thomas who raised £9000 before he died to thank hospitals that cared for him during his 10 year fight against leukaemia. Adam’s mother, Christine Evans-Thomas set up the charity and has continued to fulfil his legacy with fundraising for a state of the art Chemotherapy Day Unit.
Chris Evans-Thomas commented “Pembrokeshire people are very passionate in wanting to improve their local services. This is testament to the years of continuous generosity and fundraising by them, ensuring the best for their family and friends suffering from cancer – patient centred services delivered in Withybush Hospital by the best of professionals! We are on the first rung of the ladder and I hope that the enthusiasm shown in this meeting continues!”
Following its first meeting, Chair of the project group and Chief Operating Officer at the University Health Board, Paul Hawkins, said: “This development would not be possible without the money raised in Pembrokeshire and I’d like to take this opportunity to once again that everyone involved with the Adam’s Bucketful of Hope Appeal for all their hard work in raising such a fantastic sum of money.
“The meeting gave the University Health Board an opportunity to make it very clear that we are fully committed to developing a new Chemotherapy Day Unit at Withybush Hospital which will bring to fruition the time, effort and investment that has been made by fundraisers across Pembrokeshire.”
The project group will meet monthly with a breadth of representation from the University Health Board, Adam’s Bucketful of Hope Appeal, Pembrokeshire Cancer Support and Hywel Dda CHC. The University Health Board will also be working with people who use the services to assist in the design and environment.
Mr Ashley Warlow, Chief Officer at Hywel Dda Community Health Council said “As a CHC we are delighted that under the new University Health Board leadership this much needed project has finally got momentum. There is still a long way to go, but hopefully in the not too distant future, both staff and patients will have the chemotherapy treatment facilities within Pembrokeshire that they have long deserved and have pressed for, and this largely thanks to the magnificent and on-going fund raising by the Adam’s Bucketful of Hope Appeal. We look forward to working closely with everyone in the months ahead to achieve this goal.”
Updates will be provided as progress continues on this new development at Withybush Hospital.
