New postgraduate degrees launched by Aberystwyth University

Climate Change and Human Rights, and Enterprise and Innovation Management are among a range of new postgraduate degrees being launched by Aberystwyth University’s Department of Law and Criminology and the School of Management Business for September 2013.
The new taught masters programmes were launched at an open evening at the Law Conference Room, Hugh Owen Building on the Penglais Campus.
From August 2013 Management and Business and Law and Criminology, along with the Department of Information Studies, will become part of an innovative new interdisciplinary Institute.
This will allow closer working across departments, and involves plans for improved facilities for postgraduates, as part of a vibrant new professionally-based community.
Professor Andy Henley, Director of the new Institute said: “The employability of our postgraduate students is paramount. The global economy makes this a challenging time and it is widely recognised that it is important for students to have the necessary skills and knowledge to maximise their chances of employment.
“These new postgraduate degree schemes build on the long established reputations of the two departments in teaching and research. Research active members of staff, many of whom have national and international research reputations, will provide teaching and course leadership.”
The Higher Education Academy’s 2012 Postgraduate Taught Experience Study found that 78% of taught postgraduate students felt their employment prospects were better, while around 73% agreed they were better prepared for employment.
Professor Henley added: “We are encouraged by these findings and that our new schemes will meet students’ expectations and needs. If students feel more confident and have knowledge and skills sets relevant to employers, this will enhance their employment prospects."
The portfolio of Management and Business courses includes Enterprise and Innovation Management, International Business Management, Management and Tourism Management, Management and Digital Business and Management all of which are available for graduates from a range of other disciplines.
More specialist schemes include Marketing, Digital Marketing, Tourism Marketing, International Business, International Finance, International Finance and Accounting, and International Finance and Banking.
Law and Criminology schemes include Criminology and Criminal Justice, Climate Change and Human Rights, Information Technology Law, Internet Commerce and Law, Human Rights and Development, Rights, Gender and International Law, and International Business Law and Human Rights.
Law and Criminology has also expanded the range of distance learning degrees, building on its twenty years’ experience of this alternative form of delivery. These include Environmental Law and Management, Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Information Technology Law, International Business Law, International Business Law and Environmental Law, and Environmental and Human Rights Law.
Professor John Williams, Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Department of Law and Criminology said: “The themes adopted for our schemes reflect the international nature of the employment market not only in the commercial and business areas, but in crime and criminology, the environment and the digital world.”
