Regeneration work a boost for Ammanford
Regeneration work in Ammanford has provided an attractive gateway into the town.
Work has progressed rapidly, with improvement works at Arcade Square and Margaret Street now complete.
Detailed proposals for Quay Street are being finalised and were discussed at the last stakeholders Steering Group meeting held in February. At this meeting representatives from various stakeholder groups discussed the proposals with Carmarthenshire County Council Officers and will now report back to their various affiliations. Further liaison with the business community will be undertaken before work starts.
A new independent traders group has been formed following the recent Skillsmart Location Model Survey and will be kept fully informed on how the scheme will progress.
An important part of the regeneration of Ammanford is the Town Improvement Grant Scheme. The grants allow shop keepers and landlords to access up to 75 per cent of total project costs to fund shop front improvements up to a maximum grant of £25,000. Retailers and landlords are encouraged to contact Sam Palmer on 01269 590277 for details of the scheme and help with completing the necessary documentation.
Following the Skillsmart Location Model Survey and Mystery Shopper Exercise, when Ammanford came third out of 84 towns country wide, the Skillsmart report commented: “Ammanford seems to benefit by offering a personalised service to local people. This is provided by some of the most competent retailers Skillsmart has seen.”
Mary Portas in her recently released review says: “You’ll never to be able to compete with the range and diversity of the major multiples and supermarkets. Where you need to focus your efforts is in three core areas: Experience, Service and Specialism.”
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Clive Scourfield said: “It looks like Ammanford traders have got this right. With a helping hand from the regeneration of the street scene and the creation of a quality, relaxing environment in which to shop, Ammanford Town Centre can thrive.”
Deputy council leader Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I would like to thank our officers for all their hard work, and I’d also like to thank the Welsh Government for its support.
Hopefully this will make a difference for the people of the Amman Valley.”
Regeneration and leisure scrutiny committee chairman Cllr Anthony Jones said: “It is a welcome refurbishment of Ammanford town and we will continue to do what we can to sustain the economy and boost jobs in these difficult times.”
Local county councillor and executive board member Cllr Hugh Evans said: “I welcome the improvements being carried out. It is important that we work closely with the community and traders to ensure a successful future for Ammanford.”
