Trostre Boxing Club Fight Night at 'The Dip'
Trostre Amateur Boxing Club are gearing up for a fundraising fight night in memory of former British super-featherweight champion Robert Dickie.
Llanelli's Diplomat Hotel will play host to the annual show, which raises cash for charity, as well as much-needed funds to ensure the club can keep going.
This year, members have chosen to support the coronary department at Prince Philip Hospital, in memory of Dickie, who passed away in October following a heart attack.
Club secretary Del Phillips said: "Robert was with us at the show last year and he presented a trophy for us. He said he was honoured and humbled just to be asked to do it.
"Being a humble sort of guy he didn't think he was worthy to do so, even though he was a British champion.
"He was talking about trying to get more involved in boxing, by refereeing and judging, but unfortunately he didn't have the opportunity.
"He was a friendly, down-to-earth guy and we are honoured to be raising money in his memory."
The club, whose head coach Gareth Howells is aged 85 and has been involved in boxing since he was 16, has a well-established track record for fundraising, helping various charities over its 49 years.
"In 2009 we auctioned a rugby ball signed by Shane Williams, with the proceeds going to the Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust," Mr Phillips said.
"In 2010 gloves signed by Amir Khan and Sir Henry Cooper were auctioned and the proceeds presented to Prince Philip Chemotherapy Unit in memory of Gwynne Meyler, who had been a supporter of Trostre ABC.
"Last November we put on a show for Llanelli Rotary Club, raising thousands for their chosen charity, and this year we hope to continue with another successful event."
The black tie amateur boxing evening will include a three-course meal followed by an auction and around 10 bouts of fighting. For tickets, priced £30, call 01554 787417 or 07758439566.
The MC for the evening will be Robert Lloyd - don't know a lot about him!
