Walk and Talk in Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire families are being encouraged to tie up the laces on their walking shoes and enjoy the fresh air over the Easter holidays.
Carmarthenshire’s Local Public Health Team has launched a county-wide programme ‘Am Dro am Glonc Sir Gâr’ (Walk and Talk Carmarthenshire) to encourage local families to walk together as a regular activity in order to improve their health wellbeing.
The aim is to get more people to ‘Walk and Talk’, providing valuable family time together whilst undertaking gentle exercise and enjoying the outdoors.
As part of the programme launch, children in Carmarthenshire’s primary schools were asked to design a poster to promote walking as a great activity for children and families.
A competition was run as part of Living Streets Walk to School Month in 2010 and in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council’s Healthy Schools and Road Safety programmes.
The winners were Lee Thorne and Nathan Thomas, year four pupils at Laugharne VC Primary School whose designs were combined to produce the final poster.
They collected their prizes at Parc Y Scarlets and also had the opportunity to meet some of the players.
They also picked up 100 pedometers for the school to encourage and motivate walking amongst staff and pupils.
Posters will now be distributed to all primary schools within the county as well as other organisations working with children and families to promote walking.
It is hoped the encouragement will come just in time for this year’s Walk to School Week, which takes place from May 16-20.
Caroline Nichols, health promotion practitioner for Public Health Wales, said: “Walking is a fun and free activity. It is a great way to keep active and achieve the recommended 30 minutes of activity for adults per day and 60 minutes for children. It can be done at any time, any place and at your own pace.”
Ideas to make walking as a family an adventure include taking part in activities along the way, such as treasure hunts and playing ‘I Spy’.
