Insulation boost for Morfa properties

Council properties in the Morfa area of Llanelli are among the first in the county to be externally insulated.
Homes in Heol Tregoning and Westbury Street have been plastered using insulated over-render – a process which prevents heat loss through solid walls.
The work has been carried out as part of the £203 million Carmarthenshire Homes Standard, which will see every one of the council’s 9,200 brought up to Welsh quality standards by 2015.
As part of the programme, all homes have received cavity and loft insulation to improve energy efficiency, and to make homes more comfortable and affordable for tenants – a programme that has been completed four years ahead of schedule.
There are a small minority of homes though with solid built walls, unsuitable for cavity wall insulation.
The programme in Morfa, funded through a grant from the Welsh Assembly and British Gas, is seen as a pilot for similar types of properties elsewhere in Carmarthenshire.
CHS manager Rachel Davies said: “Work is nearing completion at Heol Tregoning and Westbury Street, and we hope tenants will soon feel the benefits, not only in terms of warmth and comfort, but also financially as programme should help to reduce their energy bills.
“We were pleased to secure the funding to undertake this work, and hope that we will be able to roll this out in other areas in the near future.”
Approximately £1.5million has been provided by British Gas, and a further £500,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Arbed initiative to run the Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP), which has funded the insulation scheme.
The programme, created by the Government, requires gas and electricity suppliers to deliver energy saving measures to domestic consumers in specific low income areas.
Approximately 600 private homes and council properties in the Glanymor area are being targeted, with energy efficiency measures including external wall insulation, cavity and loft insulation and up-to-date energy efficient central heating systems.
Head of housing, Robin Staines, said: “We have been addressing fuel poverty and energy efficiency since 2005, with the launch of our Affordable Warmth strategy.
“As well as improving the energy efficiency of 9,200 council-owned homes, we have also been active in trying to secure funding to improve the energy efficiency of owner-occupied homes – to date we have helped improve over 2,000 homes.”

external insulation gives so much benefit I'm interested to see if this is reported as a success or not as it is something that needs to be repeated across the UK
