Lighthouse job shop opens doors in Llanelli
The Lighthouse, the first 'One Stop Shop' for people who are unemployed in the Llanelli area, will open its doors to the public today (Monday 7th June 2010).
The initiative, which is funded by Jobforce Wales with a grant from The Swansea Bay Partnership Deprived Areas Fund (DAF), will see multiple organisations coming together and working in partnership to tackle the areas growing unemployment.
The centre utilises the YWCA Building in Queen Victoria Road, Llanelli and Rob Jenkins, Chief Executive of Jobforce Wales, the community enterprise behind the idea said: "The centre will provide easy access to all the services that are needed to help people into work.
“Anyone will be able to walk in off the street and discuss their needs with a Liaison Officer, who will introduce them to the relevant service within the centre”.
As part of the services provided, customers will be able to take advantage of the Community Café and the ‘One Stop Shop’ Information Centre covering – job vacancies, training and educational opportunities, health support services, debt and counselling services, employability and job search skills.
“The Lighthouse is something we see that is needed to support people in this uncertain job climate and is fitting that we are launching what is Wales’ first and currently one ‘One Stop Shop’ for the unemployed, in our 25th year of trading as a highly successful community training organisations,” said Rob Jenkins.
Organisations that have already signed up to support the Lighthouse include: Careers Wales West, Jobcentre Plus, Carmarthenshire Local Health Board, YWCA Women’s Turnaround Project, The Rowan Organisation, Shaw Trust, The Smart Programme, and Carmarthenshire County Councils – Return to Learn Programme, NEETS Officers and Jobforce Wales’ Vocational Training Programmes.
An official launch will take place later in the year, when thanks to a competition that is being run, The Lighthouse will unveil a new logo and a lucky winner will receive a new laptop.
“We would like local unemployed people to create a new logo for us; the winning logo will provide a symbol for ‘The Lighthouse’ and all that it stands for. All you have to do is send us your logo; the most appropriate design will receive a new laptop.”
To enter the competition, participants must be unemployed, aged 16 years and over and send their original drawing/printout with full contact details to: Jobforce Wales, 24 Cowell Street, Llanelli SA15 1UU, by the closing date: Friday 2nd July 2010 at 4.00pm.
