Carmarthenshire project in running for national award
A Carmarthenshire project which is helping people overcome chronic alcohol problems by supporting them to gain confidence and life skills is through to the semi finals of the National Lottery Awards 2010.
Turning Point, with the support of partners including Carmarthenshire County Council, has been successfully shortlisted for the awards for its innovative Carmarthenshire Life Skills Project under the Best Health Project category.
The winning project in each category will receive national recognition on a star-studded BBC 1 show later this year and will receive a £2,000 cash prize to spend on their project.
The prize will be in addition to the £997,927 the project has already received from The Big Lottery, which has been received over the last four years.
People are being encouraged to vote for the CLSP project which will help local people to rebuild their lives and put their alcohol problems behind them.
Andrew Soroka, Carmarthenshire Life Skills Project Service Manager said: “Without the Big Lottery this service would never have been possible and people in Carmarthenshire would not be able to access the aftercare support that they so desperately need to rebuild their lives after recovering from alcohol addictions.
“We are delighted to have reached the semi-finals of The National Lottery Awards. We’re really hoping the public gets behind us and votes as it would be fantastic to get national recognition for the quality work that we do.”
The CLSP project provides people with training and information which helps bridge the gap between detox services and re-entering the community.
It has four unique programmes - a life skills group work programme, which focuses on relapse prevention, harm reduction, abstinence and promoting healthy lifestyle choices; a four-week rolling anger management programme focussing on coping mechanisms and trigger points; and a training, education and employment programme which focuses on interview techniques, CVs, motivational interviewing and preparation for employment training.
It’s most recent programme is a new project called Project Tyfu which focuses on developing skills in horticulture, landscaping and gardening, and which will hopefully culminate in a market garden scheme.
Cllr Pat Jones, Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for health and social care, said: “We at Carmarthenshire County Council are proud to be working with Turning Point and supporting them on this very worthwhile project.
“I hope people come out in force and vote, which if successful will be another funding boost for the project.”
Voting for the semi-finals stages ends at midday on Friday, June 18. To register your vote for Carmarthenshire Life Skills Project call 0844 686 9317 or log on to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards
The three projects in each of the seven categories with the most number of votes will go through to the final round of public voting in July.
