Helpers need for Carmarthenshire lodgings scheme
New applicants are being sought to join Carmarthenshire’s Supported Lodgings Scheme.
Carmarthenshire County Council is seeking people who have a spare room and could offer supported lodgings to young people who have left, or are about to leave, local authority care.
The authority wants to attract people from all walks of life and from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Supported lodgings providers offer support, encouragement and guidance to young people within their own homes.
Whilst the level of support needed by each young person varies, the general level of assistance needed includes help with everyday tasks such as keeping appointments, completing forms, budgeting, cooking and laundry.
Sharon James, senior practitioner, said: “Becoming a supported lodgings provider is an excellent way of helping young people prepare for independence. In return, the provider receives payment and support from officers within the leaving care service, and the satisfaction of having helped someone develop the skills to look after themselves.”
The Supported Lodgings Scheme is run and managed by the council’s leaving care service which assists young people who leave local authority care, but who are not yet ready to live independently.
The scheme aims to address the gap between leaving care and living alone, and encourage young people in the independent living skills needed to move on with confidence.
The young people supported under the scheme are still involved with the local authority and come from a variety of backgrounds, some of them actively take part in college or training courses which is encouraged and supported by the team.
Cllr Gwynne Wooldridge, executive board member for children and young people, said: “Providing you have room in your home, are of good health, and have a good background, you could make an ideal supported lodgings provider. We’ve got a great support team on hand to offer advice and guidance, and I’d encourage anyone who is interested to give them a call to find out more.”
