Bid to raise European awareness in Carmarthenshire

A major project is underway to educate people about Carmarthenshire’s role in Europe.
The county has again been selected as a centre of excellence to champion links with the continent.
The County Council’s West Wales European Centre has received grant funding from the European Commission to provide the Europe Direct Information Service.
It is one of only three centres in Wales and one of 400 others across Europe.
A huge drive to educate people of all ages about the continent is now being rolled out across the area.
The Council’s European Networking Officer Lorena Prist is visiting schools, groups and organisations of part of the awareness raising scheme.
Seminars are being arranged for teachers, regular Town Twinning Forum meetings are held and schools are being supported to take part in the Euroscola programme, where students spend a day in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.
The aim is to let people know about the EU’s institutions, legislation, policies, programmes and funding opportunities.
A high profile Europe Day has just been held to celebrate the day in 1950 when the first move was made towards the creation of what is now the EU.
Hundreds of schoolchildren performed songs and a continental street market took over Llanelli town centre.
Organisers wanted to bring Europe’s diverse culture to the county and celebrate the music, dance and food of the continent.
Lorena said the Europe Direct service was aimed at raising awareness of the role Europe plays in people’s everyday lives.
She said: “We are working to educate people about the EU and its policies.
“We target groups and organisations and attend events to hand out information and publications. We try to tailor the information to local and regional needs and let people know how they can contact Members of the EU Parliament.”
The scheme also involves arranging overseas exchange visits for students and working with twinning associations to promote the county.
The council’s Regeneration Executive Board Member cllr Clive Scourfield said: “I am delighted that Carmarthenshire has been successful in being awarded the Europe Direct contract.
“This is a very valuable project which is providing essential information to people in the area.”
