The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star and Carmarthen Journal
The latest 'On Song' column (about the choral scene in and around Llanelli) from the Llanelli Star -
Chwarae Teg . . . fair play. You’ve got to take your hat off to the ladies of the inspirational Llanelli choir Côr Curiad.
They believe in going for gold with their charity concerts.
Côr Curiad’s choristers will be welcoming Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro to Llanelli’s Ffwrnes Theatre on Saturday, May 14.
And the event has been a ‘full-house’ sell-out for months, with proceeds from the event going towards one of Llanelli’s most popular charitable causes, the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice adjacent to Prince Philip Hospital.
Côr Curiad, formed in 1995, is led by Alex Esney-Davies, supported by accompanist Jane Jewell.
The aim of the choir is to enjoy singing together, give pleasure to audiences and raise money for charity.
The choir’s biggest achievement to date was in 2012, when, with the support of Rhydian Roberts (TV’s X Factor), a sell-out concert raised £16,500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Last year, the choir celebrated their 20th anniversary.
The year saw a memorable gala concert featuring Paul Potts and the ladies handed over a cheque for £10,000 to Calon + a charity which supports the cardio and respiratory rehabilitation service at Prince Philip Hospital.
There are currently around 30 members, with an age range from 14 – 80-plus.
The ladies rehearse between 6.45 pm and 9pm every Thursday evening at the school room at Hall Street Church, West End, Llanelli.
The choir’s special guests for the May concert are Collabro, an English operatic, musical theatre boy band who won the eighth series of Britain's Got Talent in 2014.
Specialising in musical theatre, the group consists of Michael Auger, Richard Hadfield, Jamie Lambert, Matthew Pagan and Thomas J Redgrave.
The band have an enthusiastic following whom they refer to as their "Collaborators" and famous fans include Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix.
Their debut album Stars was released on 18 August 2014 and debuted at number one in the UK.
In 2015, Collabro revealed they had signed a record deal with Sony Masterworks in the US for £1 million.
Collabro’s most recent Welsh performance was in Cardiff, so this represents a great opportunity for the people of West Wales to hear the group in action.
