New digital outreach service launched for rural Carmarthenshire

A new digital outreach service is being launched to help people in rural parts of Carmarthenshire.
It will give them access to the same advice and support which is available in the Hub in Llanelli town centre without having to travel to the Hub itself.
The Hub is a one stop shop which brings together all advice, information, education, voluntary, housing, and employment opportunities in the county.
Experienced advisers, who have extensive knowledge of all the opportunities and services available, are on hand to help.
The new outreach service is known as the hub-spoke and involves customers undertaking a Skype interview with any of the Hub’s support services from a dedicated public access point.
There will be two hub-spokes – one at the Municipal Buildings in Llandeilo, and the other at Llandovery Library.
They are part of a new project - the Carmarthenshire Universal Support Delivered Locally (USDL) trial, which is one of only two in Wales.
The scheme, which is a partnership between local authorities and the Department for Works and Pension, aims to develop the support needed by customers affected by Universal Credit changes to the welfare system.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s anti-poverty champion Cllr Pam Palmer said: “This service will give people in rural areas access to the same expert advice available in Llanelli town centre, without them having to travel there.
“The introduction of Universal Credit is going to be a huge worry for many people and this service will hopefully provide advice and information which will help them.
“It will also give them access to information on training and jobs, and many other opportunities.”
The hub-spoke service is free of charge and customers do not need their own internet access or Skype account.
It is being launched at the Municipal Buildings in Llandeilo on Friday, February 27, from 10am to 12noon, and at Llandovery Library on Friday, March 6, at the same times.

'Class of 1980' from Burry Port enjoy reunion

There was a big class reunion held in Burry Port at the weekend. Members of the Class of 1980 from Porth Tywyn (Burry Port junior) School got together at The Coasting Pilot pub. The reunion was organised by Christine Rees and same 22 members of the original class of 28 turn up to discuss their old schooldays. One ‘Class of 1980’ member was Burry Port businessman Owain Davies. He said: “We all have very happy memories of our time in school. We had a fantastic teacher in Mr Heddwyn Jones, who now lives in Four Roads. “We were very fortunate to have the same teacher for three years and we were a very happy class. Mr Jones was an inspiring teacher and we all got on every well and we are all still good friends. “Heather Thomas (now Heather Osmond) made it from Surrey, but she was trumped by Gail Morris, who flew in from Ohio in the United States for the reunion. “It was a fantastic evening at the Coasting Pilot with good food, good wine and good company. Lauryn Davey is making her mark in athletics - but needs sponsors

Ammanford-based Lauryn Davey is making a major mark in the world of Welsh athletics. At just 16, she is the best all-round athlete of her age in Wales. She's chalking up Welsh championship victories and has been honoured by her club, the Carmarthen Harriers. Lauryn's been earmarked as a future international star, but knows the road to the big championships is difficult, demanding and expensive. Ammanford businessman and well-known comic entertainer Phil Evans has launched a campaign to get cash backers for Lauryn's athletics career. "Everyone in the area is hugely proud of her achievements in athletics to date," said Phil. "But we also want to see her go on and do bigger and better things.
