Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway heritage plans progressing

Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway is progressing with plans for a heritage centre plus demonstration steam and diesel railway.
The long term aim of the company, based in Cynheidre, is to provide a successful tourist attraction, which will benefit the whole area.
President Cllr Tegwen Devichand and Carmarthenshire County Council regeneration director Dave Gilbert paid a recent visit to the site.
Cllr Devichand said: “I invited Mr Gilbert to come and see our plans, and the good progress we are making.
“We welcomed his views and advice, and look forward to inviting him back at some point in the future.
“Making this a successful attraction would not only benefit local people and preserve an historic service, but would attract visitors to the county, bringing with them economic benefits for the whole area.”
Formed in 1999, LMMR consists of volunteers who give their time freely to help the project.
To date, they have placed a loco shed and stock shed on site, Cynheidre Station platform is in place, along with most of the line for phase one.
A new access road has been completed, a lake and dipping platform constructed, tree planting carried out along with other environmental works.
LMMR Project Manager Des Thomas said: “Stage one of the project is making steady progress, completion depends on funding applications and volunteer numbers.
“We aim to become a working railway and tourist attraction, along with providing a gift shop and on site buffet railway coach.”
