Mid Wales healthcare update for Cardigan residents

People in Cardigan and surrounding areas had a chance to learn more about progress towards Cardigan Integrated Resource Centre and the future of wider healthcare services in Mid Wales, at an event hosted by Hywel Dda University Health Board.
In total, more than 60 people attended either the drop-in session about the Cardigan development and new model of care or the presentation and question and answer session on the Mid Wales Healthcare Study. Both events were held at the Small World Theatre on Monday 19 January.
An independent report by Professor Marcus Longley, the Mid Wales Healthcare Study recommends Bronglais Hospital is developed as a hub hospital for mid Wales and suggests ways to improve primary care and community services.
University Health Board Medical Director Dr Sue Fish gave an overview of the study and its 12 recommendations at the Cardigan meeting, together with next steps. This includes the formation of a Mid Wales Healthcare Collaborative between Hywel Dda University Health Board, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Powys Teaching Health Board, the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust and other stakeholders to ensure the best co-ordinated care for the people of mid-Wales. A date has also been set for a Mid Wales Healthcare Study Conference on 12 March at Cefn Lea Park, Dolfor, Newtown.
Dr Fish said: “The conference is aimed at anyone with an interest in healthcare in Mid Wales or rural health care more generally and will give everyone – clinicians, citizens and managers - a great chance to learn and be creative together.”
Other University Health Board senior staff, clinicians and independent members were also in attendance and part of the panel, as well as representation from Hywel Dda Community Health Council.
Themes discussed included best practice all-Wales projects already being undertaken by Hywel Dda UHB in Ceredigion; the commitment and planning for Cardigan Integrated Resource Centre; the need for local palliative care services; the use of telemedicine to cut travel times; ongoing UK-wide recruitment challenges and innovative University Health Board plans to address this; future training needs and new ways of working; financial challenges; positive promotion of healthcare services and the need to build public confidence through ongoing locality public engagement events.
Hywel Dda University Health Board Vice Chair Sian-Marie James said: “The engagement events we have held so far, with staff, stakeholders and the public, have been helpful in allowing us to listen, explain and discuss together the right solutions to help improve services locally. We will continue to keep people fully involved and updated on the project as it progresses.”
