The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star

The latest 'On Song' column from the Llanelli Star -

Côr Meibion Llanelli choristers have received a very special invitation to Austria as part of the choir’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The choir will be travelling to Salzburg in November for a concert in the city.
They will also be performing at nearby Oberndorf, the birthplace of the Christmas Carol Silent Night.
“It’s a wonderful honour for the choir,” said Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas.
“Our 50th anniversary year will be full of memorable occasions, but the trip to Austria promises to be an extra-special highlight.
“Oberndorf is known the world over as the birthplace of Silent Night, a composition by Franz Gruber and Joseph Mohr. It is wonderful to think that Côr Meibion Llanelli will be singing Silent Night in the town where it was first performed.”
Mr Thomas added: “Our concert schedule for our 50th anniversary year is filling up rapidly and this promises to be a great year for choir members.
“We are always on the look-out for new members and anyone interested can pop along to one of our weekly rehearsal sessions to meet members and get a feel for what it would be like to be part of our 50th anniversary year.”
Côr Meibion Llanelli rehearsals are at Furnace Community Hall in Llanelli, 7pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
The singing trio Blake will be at Ffwrnes on Saturday, February 1.
Combining the vocal grandeur of The Three Tenors with the infectious harmonies of The Bee Gees and the comedy of the Rat Pack, Blake will be appearing after major tours in Asia, America and Europe.
They will be performing numbers from their new album ‘Start Over’.
Joining Blake will be classical soprano Natalie Coyle and the Llanelli-based Hywel Girls’ Choir and Hywel Boy Singers under the baton of musical director John Hywel Williams MBE.
There will be a special St David’s Day Gala Concert at Ffwrnes on Saturday, March 1.
The concert will feature The Three Welsh Tenors, the combined Côr Meibion Llanelli and Bridgend Male Choirs, Parti Llwchwr Ladies Choir and the BBC’s Garry Owen as compere.
The Three Welsh Tenors are Aled Hall, Alun Rhys-Jenkins and Rhys Meirion.
The Llanelli Choral Society are preparing for an exciting choral and orchestral performance in April when they perform Britten’s Saint Nicholas and classical highlights by the British Sinfonietta Orchestra.
Future performances include participating in the Hywel Choir’s Last Night of the Proms, performing in the Festival of Remembrance at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall and an exciting Autumn performance of Carmina Burana at Y Ffwrnes.
Burry Port Male Voice Choir will be taking part in a Cymanfa Ganu (community singing event) at 7pm on March 9 at Jerusalem Chapel, Burry Port.
The event will raise funds for the Burry Port National Eisteddfod committee in advance of the 2014 Carmarthenshire Eisteddfod to be held in Llanelli. The event has been organised by the Eisteddfod committee and the choir will help boost the audience numbers.
