Four Llanelli choirs have been performing under the glare of the TV lights at Y Ffwrnes theatre in Llanelli this week.
The special occasion has seen four editions of S4C’s Noson Lawen Welsh language variety programme recorded at Y Ffwrnes.
Côr Meibion Llanelli, the Hywel Girls Choir and Hywel Boys Singers, Cantata and the Ysgol y Strade choir have been taking part in the recording sessions on four consecutive nights.
The final recording session takes place tonight (Wednesday) and sees international rugby referee Nigel Owens acting as compere for the evening, with a bill which includes Ysgol y Strade choir, celebrated Welsh band Jac y Do and soprano soloist Gwawr Edwards.
“It just shows what a rich place Llanelli is for great choral singing,” said Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas. “To have four choirs from the town featured in the TV recordings is a great achievement.”
There was a special concert at Five Roads Village Hall last week to raise funds to provide a war memorial at Five Roads Park
Five Roads School Choir took to the stage, along with the Burry Port Male Voice Choir.
Harpist Rhiannon Evans was also on the bill, along with renowned pianist David Geoffrey Thomas, Director of Llandaff Cathedral Parish Choir and Director of ‘Cantores Landavenses’.
One of the organisers of the concert, Richard Thomas, said: “As you would expect, the school choir from Five Roads stole the show. It was a hugely entertaining evening and we are grateful to one and all for attending and contributing.”
On Saturday, July 13, members of Cor Lleisiau Hardd will perform their annual concert in Y Ffwrnes theatre for the first time.
The choir will be welcoming West End and Broadway star John Owen Jones, who will also make his debut Ffwrnes performance.
The 50-strong choir — comprising the senior choir and Lleisiau Hardd Bach — includes members from Llanelli, Swansea and Carmarthen and will be accompanied on the night by a five-piece band, also from Llanelli.
