'Green Day' held at Burry Port school

School pupils in Burry Port are going green.
A ‘Green Day’ was held at Glanymor School to raises awareness on issues including litter, waste and recycling and energy efficiency.
A workshop was held with Year 9 pupils who are looking at designing their own eco house with council sustainability officers there to offer advice on composting food and garden waste. A second workshop was also held with TATA Steel on can recycling.
Pupils then carried out a litter-pick of the school grounds, the bus bay and the area outside the school in the afternoon. In total they collected 26kg of rubbish mostly crisp packets, sweet and chocolate wrappers, drinks bottles and cans as a result of ‘eating on the go.’
The pupils have now suggested a rota for form groups to carry out litter-picks in these hot-spot areas in form period and morning registration.
A lot of work is underway at the school to help the environment. As well as having recycling bins in the classroom and in the yard, the school also has a clothes bank for pupils and staff to bring in unused and unwanted clothing to donate to developing countries.
Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “I am very impressed with the efforts being made at Ysgol Glanymor in relation to waste and recycling. It is important that we look at how we can reduce our rubbish and recycle as much as possible if we are to meet targets for both recycling and landfill.”
Glanymor pupils also helped the council’s waste awareness team with a Jubilee-themed event in Carmarthen. A Jubilee tea party was set up using vintage style furniture, crockery, banners, tablecloths kindly donated for the display by YMCA and Plant Dewi charity shops and the pupils used unwanted/spare fabric and materials to make Jubilee style cushions with a Welsh twist!
Council sustainability officer Tina Brice said: “We were delighted with the cushions made by pupils for our Jubilee tea-party display; we had a lot of comments from the public on how lovely they were.”
The county is currently recycling 49% of its waste but must reach a 52% recycling target by the end of 2012/13 as set byWelsh Government.
