Amman Valley team win consumer competition
A team from Amman Valley School, Ammanford has won this year’s Carmarthenshire Young Consumers of the Year competition, run by Carmarthenshire Trading Standards Services.
The national competition is organised by the Trading Standards Institute (T.S.I.), the national body representing trading standards officers in the UK and aims to increase consumer awareness amongst young people.
The competition took the form of a quiz between teams of four, all between the ages of 14 and 17, from schools and colleges. The subjects covered included consumer law, money, credit and finance, environmental issues, and food and safety.
This year the Carmarthenshire final, which was sponsored by Brecon Carreg, was contested between three qualifying teams, Amman Valley School, Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn and Ysgol Tre-Gib on Friday January 27, in the Carwyn James Suite, Parc Y Scarlets.
The winning Amman Valley School team consisted of Aidan Ware, Daniel Matthews, James Leonard, Kieran Lloyd-Jones, and reserve team member Jack Thomas.
The presentation of the prizes was conducted by former Welsh international and Scarlets player, Dafydd Jones.
Executive board member for public protection Cllr Pam Palmer said: “I would like to congratulate the team from Amman Valley School on its victory and all the teams for taking part in the final.
“The whole experience should provide pupils with invaluable information, which will help prepare them for their journey through life as consumers.”
Kayleigh Phillips who organised the event said: “There was a very high standard involved in this years competition, I’d like to thank all the schools that took part.”
Amman Valley School will now go on to represent the county in this year’s Welsh final of the Young Consumers of the Year competition, to be held at the Pavilion, Llandrindod Wells, on March 12 and 13.
