Support for Burry Port Tesco welcomed

Public support for Tesco’s plans for a new supermarket in Burry Port has been welcomed by Carmarthenshire County Council.
Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Cllr Clive Scourfield said the project would bring a major superstore to Burry Port benefiting shoppers and the local economy.
The supermarket chain held a public exhibition in Burry Port Memorial Hall last Friday and Saturday and visited residents of the Plas y Mor extra care facility on Thursday afternoon.
Tesco has plans for a store on the Llanelli Waterside Joint Venture land known as the Fairground Field. It lies behind the Neptune Hotel and Burry Port Harbour.
The store will provide a boost to the local economy by creating 130 full-time and part-time jobs.
The joint Venture is a partnership between the County Council and Welsh Assembly to help best promote the regeneration of Llanelli Waterside which extends through to Burry Port.
Cllr Scourfield said: “It is a development very much to be welcomed. It is bringing a big store presence to Burry Port on a derelict piece of land that we would very much like to see occupied.
“There will be the further benefit with community improvement of a Section 106 legal agreement which will play a part in furthering the development of Burry Port.”
Local member Cllr Stephen James said: “I’m delighted that the exhibition has gone so well with a great response from the public. We want it as soon as possible.
“There is overwhelming support for a petrol station and I would like to see that developed as part of the scheme.”
Fellow local member Cllr Pat Jones said: “People want the Tesco store as soon as possible. It’s bringing 130 jobs for local people - the jobs will be advertised in Burry Port and Pembrey.”
Local 19-year-old Daniel Davies said: “We need work in this area and we want jobs. It is fantastic news that so many jobs are coming to Burry Port.”
Alice Jordan of Plas y Mor said: “It’s fantastic, I can't wait for it to be here. It will help local people to have jobs especially our young people.”
Derek Davies, also of Plas y Mor, said: “It will be very helpful for me to get my shopping and wheel it back to Plas y Mor. It will be great. I hope it will be built by Christmas this year.”
