Town return to action in Tregaron friendly

Carmarthen Town returned to action last Saturday with their first friendly match prior to the 2011/12 Welsh Premier League campaign.
Tomi Morgan took a squad made up mainly of trialists with a few of last season’s squad and new signings to Tregaron, to play the Spar Mid Wales League side.
Although the game ended in a a 1-1 draw with the Old Gold only equalising in the last few minutes of the game Morgan was pleased with the application of his squad.
”All players were asked to report for training in Tregaron at 11am. Despite holiday and work commitments we had 20 players out there trying to prove that they deserved a place in the squad for the coming season. We had an excellent training session for an hour and a half before having a break prior to the 3pm kick off.”
Morgan started with an experimental line up containing only four of last season’s squad with Tim Hicks playing in the back four, Geraint Passmore and Kieran Howard anchoring the midfield and Oli Ardolino playing up front. Town dominated the initial opening period, but with Morgan and assistant Colin Staples making changes on the half hour, became rather disjointed.
Debutant keeper Rhys Wilson looked accomplished in goal but was surprisingly beaten just before the half time break when a speculative shot was caught by the wind and ended in the back of the net.
The Old Gold management team continued to experiment with their line up and it was only late in the game striker Nick Harrhy was introduced along with new signings Jack Christopher and Cledan Davies.
The EH Factors and Clothing sponsored Carmarthen Town side immediately upped the tempo and created a plethora of chances which, unfortunately, they proceeded to miss.
Eventually it was Passmore who secured the equaliser as he spectacularly shot home after a good passing movement.
Morgan praised the opposition for their efforts.
“I thought that Tregaron were very impressive and played some excellent football. They certainly forced us to raise our game in order to get an equaliser. I would also like to thank the club for making their facilities available for the training session and the game and for providing refreshments after training and after the game.”
Town faced Rhayader last night in another friendly before travelling to Ton Pentre next Saturday against Welsh League Division One opponents with the kick off at 2.30pm.
Season ticket holders and Vice Presidents are reminded that their tickets are up for renewal. Monies to Clive Thomas, 59 Nant yr Arian, Carmarthen
Town will kick off their new Welsh Premier League season at home to Newtown on the 13th of August.
