Surf the net advice to older people

Older people in Carmarthenshire have been encouraged to surf the Net at a special event organised by Carmarthenshire 50+ this week.
The Computers, the Internet and You event in Carmarthen Community Education Centre was a chance to encourage people to get online and to encourage those already online to make better use of the Internet.
Those attending had a chance to see demonstrations on looking local, how to use Facebook or Skype and how to use Internet banking.
50+ Steering Group members went round conducting 1 minute interviews on ‘how can we get as many older people as possible on-line in Carmarthenshire?’
There were stalls to browse including CAVS media project, looking local/communities 2.0, community education and Age Concern.
Mary Evans of Johnstown said she had found the event very informative.
“I have a visual impairment and have come for one-to-one advice. When I worked I had that support from my employer but I’m retired now.”
Carmarthenshire County Council deputy leader and 50+ Champion Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I’m pleased that so many people have attended this event. This is something the council will take forward.
“We want to help as many older people in Carmarthenshire as possible to get to grips with emails and the Internet. It can make it so much easier for them to keep in touch and access information and services. It can make a real difference.”
Welsh Government Digital Inclusion Unit head Alun Burge said: “It has been a pleasure to come to Carmarthenshire and meet more than 100 members of the local community. I have been really surprised by how interested people are and by how much they want to become involved and use the Internet.
“About half the people in the room use the Internet and wanted to know what more they can use it for and the other half wanted to find out what it’s all about.”
